A supplier offers Chinese flame-retardant PC/ABS or ABS/ASA and shows a data sheet or UL Yellow Card with V-0. Does that evidence prove the buyer's molded housing will pass, and what must be matched before the claim can be used in material approval?

No single V-0 statement proves the finished housing. UL 94 is a controlled, small-scale material preselection test, and a Yellow Card identifies recognition for a named manufacturer, material grade and recorded scope such as color and minimum thickness. Verify the current record and file number, exact grade, producer and manufacturing site, color coverage, recognized thickness and test classification. Then compare them with the thinnest relevant wall, complete compound, molding history and the end-product standard. A pigment, flame-retardant package, recycled content, MBS or acrylic modifier, source factory or grade change can move the evidence outside its recognized scope and can change burning behavior. The end product may require other fire, electrical, mechanical or enclosure evaluations. Confirm every requirement for the actual formulation, batch, part, customer and destination; neither a copied certificate nor a lower China factory-gate price establishes approval.

Information that changes the recommendation

  • Exact end product, destination market, customer specification and the current product-level safety standard or certification path

Read the scope before reading the class. The current UL 94 standard describes standardized specimens exposed to controlled ignition sources and states that the results are a preliminary indication of material acceptability for a particular application. It is not a simulation of every fire scenario and does not by itself approve a molded enclosure. First identify the end-product standard and ask which material preselection class, thickness and additional component or product tests it requires.

Treat the Yellow Card as a scoped identity record. UL Solutions explains that a Yellow Card is issued through its Plastics Recognition Program for polymeric materials that receive a Recognized Component Mark. Match the exact manufacturer, file number and grade, then read every relevant row and note. UL's color-code guide defines entries such as ALL, AO, NC and specific color abbreviations and explains that the table reports minimum thickness and flame class. Do not interpret one listed color or thickness as universal coverage.

Keep test families separate. UL Solutions describes V-0, V-1 and V-2 as outcomes of the 50 W vertical test and 5VA or 5VB as outcomes of a different 500 W program. IEC 60695-11-10:2013 similarly covers 50 W horizontal and vertical material tests, while IEC 60695-11-20:2015 covers 500 W procedures. A V-0 statement is therefore not interchangeable with 5VA, 5VB, glow-wire, CTI, enclosure or end-product requirements. Use the method explicitly named by the current specification.

Freeze the complete compound before comparing evidence. Changing pigment, color masterbatch, flame retardant, recycled feedstock, filler, lubricant or an MBS or acrylic impact modifier can change burning, dripping, flow and mechanical behavior. It can also create a formulation that is not the recognized grade. Ask the manufacturer or certification owner to confirm whether the exact color and formulation fall within the active recognition; when they do not, plan the required testing instead of extending a family claim by assumption.

Link thickness to the real part and to the exact grade. Covestro's Bayblend FR3010 page is a useful manufacturer example because it reports different UL 94 classifications at named thicknesses for one exact FR PC/ABS grade. Those values apply only within the supplier's stated conditions and current recognition scope; they are not generic PC/ABS targets and should not be copied to a Chinese substitute. Measure the thinnest fire-relevant wall after molding and include local thinning, knit lines, openings and design tolerances in the review.

Control specimen history and report traceability. ISO 291 defines standard atmospheres for conditioning plastics, while each fire method may prescribe its own specimens and preconditioning. Require the report to identify method and edition, material/grade, color, thickness, conditioning, molding or preparation route, test dates, results and laboratory. ISO/IEC 17025 provides competence requirements for testing laboratories, but accreditation alone does not prove that a specific test is in scope or that a report belongs to the offered lot; verify both.

Build a release rule for the Chinese source factory. Reconcile the Yellow Card or report owner with the actual producer, site, bag label, SDS, COA and contract. Decide whether the factory supplies the recognized grade, manufactures under authorization or offers a separate candidate needing new evidence. Test production-representative lots and parts, retain samples and require notice before changes to resin, FR package, pigment, modifier, recycled content, process or site. Compare factory-gate and landed price only after defining this evidence chain, with exact grade, quantity, packaging, currency, delivery rule, named place and validity.

  • Never edit a supplier report or treat a report for another color, plant, grade or formulation as evidence for the offered material.
  • When comparing Chinese alternatives, run the same specified method and specimen history, then protect impact, flow, heat, dimensions and appearance as parallel acceptance criteria.
  • Keep the technical approval decision independent from China source-factory and factory-gate price claims; document the commercial basis only after scope is confirmed.
