A buyer wants a Chinese backup source for an imported or single-source MBS or acrylic impact modifier used in PC/ABS. What must be verified before the new material can be placed on the approved supplier list and used in a commercial switch?

Quick answer

Qualify the second source as a controlled material-and-process system, not as a trade-name match. Freeze the incumbent formulation, application, critical tests and acceptable process window; verify the Chinese producer, manufacturing site and exact grade; then progress from document review to lab screening, pilot compounding, representative molded parts and multiple commercial lots. Define lot traceability, retained samples, change notification, incoming controls and the conditions that authorize or stop a switch. Compare total landed cost separately from technical approval. A similar TDS, an ISO 9001 certificate, one good sample or a lower China factory-gate price does not establish interchangeability. Every property, compliance document, capacity statement, lead time and commercial term must be confirmed for the exact grade, batch, site, destination and contract.

Information that changes the recommendation

  • Incumbent modifier identity, dosage, function, approved manufacturing site and the reason a second source is needed
  • PC/ABS matrix grade and ratio, recycled content, flame retardant, pigment, filler, lubricant and other additives held constant during comparison
  • Critical-to-quality requirements: room- and low-temperature impact, MFR or MVR, modulus, tensile behavior, color, gloss, odor, thermal aging and part-specific tests
  • Exact test methods, specimen preparation, conditioning, temperatures, acceptance rules, number of specimens and treatment of outliers
  • Chinese supplier legal entity, unified social credit code, contracting entity, actual producer, manufacturing address and relationship between trader and source factory
  • Exact candidate grade, TDS and SDS revision, COA format, bag label, production date, batch code, sample source and commercial availability
  • Pilot and commercial-lot quantities, production equipment or site used, retained samples and sample-to-purchase-order traceability
  • Quality-system scope, process controls, nonconformance handling, complaint path, advance change-notification content and notice period
  • Capacity evidence, raw-material risk, contingency plan, normal lead time, minimum order, packaging, shelf-life guidance and storage requirements
  • Factory-gate and landed-cost assumptions tied to quantity, currency, payment, package, Incoterms 2020 rule, named place, freight, duties and quotation validity

Start from the function that must remain stable, not from the incumbent trade name. An impact modifier can affect more than notched impact: low-temperature fracture, modulus, melt flow, color, gloss, thermal stability, dispersion and PC/ABS compatibilization may all matter. Manufacturer pages illustrate this specificity: Dow identifies EXL-2620 as an MBS core-shell grade for PC and PC/ABS, while EXL-2315 is acrylic and positioned with a different balance. These exact-grade examples show why the labels MBS, ACR or 'equivalent' are not sufficient purchasing specifications.

Freeze a qualification baseline before asking for samples. Record the incumbent modifier, dosage, complete PC/ABS recipe, drying, feeding, screw configuration, compounding throughput, molding window, specimen preparation and every acceptance method. ISO 180 defines Izod testing under specified specimen and notch conditions, and ISO 1133-1 defines MFR or MVR under stated temperature and load. Use the method and conditions required by the application; never mix family-level TDS values, internal methods and customer methods in one ranking.

Verify who will actually manufacture and contract. Use China's National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System, linked by the State Administration for Market Regulation, to check the legal entity and public registration information. Then reconcile the business licence, unified social credit code, bank beneficiary, invoice entity, plant address, bag label, SDS supplier identity and purchase contract. A trader can be a valid commercial partner, but the buyer should still know which factory and site produced the approved grade and who controls changes.

Use a staged evidence ladder. First review exact-grade TDS, SDS, specification, COA template and change policy. Next compound a controlled lab or pilot sample against the incumbent and a blank where useful. Then mold representative parts and test the full property balance. Finally, obtain multiple normal commercial lots made at the proposed production site. A hand-prepared sample, a development batch or one unusually small lot should not silently become evidence for routine mass production.

Audit the processes that can change the product, not just the certificate. ISO 9001 provides a quality-management framework, but certification alone does not prove that a particular modifier grade is technically equivalent. ISO 19011:2026 provides guidance for management-system audit programmes and risk-based auditing. A second-party supplier assessment should therefore trace raw-material receipt, batch formulation, reaction or finishing controls, blending, screening, packaging, laboratory release, nonconformance, retained samples, complaint handling and change authorization for the exact site and product family.

Convert approval into an executable control plan. Define the incoming documents and tests for launch lots, lot-code rules, sampling location, retention period, escalation limits and switching rules. ISO 2859-1:2026 provides AQL-indexed sampling schemes for inspection by attributes, including switching concepts, but it does not choose the buyer's critical characteristics or replace material-property testing. Set the plan with quality specialists, tighten it during launch or after deterioration, and stop switching when identity, test or process evidence is incomplete.

Keep commercial comparison separate and explicit. A China source-factory or factory-gate price is only one line in landed cost. ICC's Incoterms 2020 rules allocate delivery tasks, costs and risks, so every offer should name the rule, named place and version together with grade, quantity, packaging, currency, payment and validity. Add freight, insurance where applicable, duty, local handling, financing, safety stock, qualification cost and disruption risk. Reconfirm capacity and lead time for the actual order; do not invent or carry forward an old promise.

Step-by-step evaluation

  1. 01Write a second-source charter stating the business reason, application, incumbent grade, no-change variables, critical properties and authorized decision team.
  2. 02Screen candidate legal entities and manufacturing sites, then reconcile registration, contract, payment, SDS, label and factory information.
  3. 03Issue one controlled request package for the exact grade: TDS, SDS, specification, COA template, quality scope, change policy, capacity basis and sample identity.
  4. 04Run a small controlled dosage screen against the incumbent using the same PC/ABS formulation, compounding line, molding conditions and test methods.
  5. 05Confirm the selected candidate on representative molded parts, including low-temperature, aging, appearance and application-specific risks where required.
  6. 06Purchase and test multiple normal commercial lots from the intended site; link every result to batch code, label, COA, production date and retained sample.
  7. 07Complete the supplier/process assessment, corrective actions, launch inspection plan, change-notification agreement and commercial contract before listing approval.
  8. 08Authorize switching only through the written rule, preserve lot segregation and traceability, and review supplier performance after launch before reducing controls.

What to record before approval

  • Do not let the incumbent trade name become the whole specification; define the property balance and finished-part risks that must be protected.
  • Do not approve from one sample: require normal commercial lots from the exact site and retain both approved and incoming references.
  • Verify that certificates, reports and declarations cover the named legal entity, site, grade, revision and valid period rather than a corporate family.
  • Predefine the response to a failed lot, late delivery, raw-material or site change; dual sourcing without a switching rule can create a new uncontrolled risk.
  • Keep technical approval independent from price negotiation, then compare factory-gate and landed cost with the exact Incoterm, named place and validity.
