A buyer is qualifying a Chinese MBS impact modifier, acrylic modifier or MBS-modified PC/ABS pellet. A supplier provides a moisture value and refers to ISO 15512. Does that number prove the material will mold without surface defects or meet the final part requirement?

Quick answer

No. ISO 15512:2019 specifies methods for determining water content in plastics, including powders and granules. A reported result can help control an agreed incoming-material or post-drying condition only when the sampling point, method, sample handling, instrument, result units, lot identity and acceptance limit are documented. It does not by itself prove dryer performance at the press, melt stability, dispersion, impact, flame classification, electrical behavior or defect-free molding. Use it alongside a defined drying and handling route, a frozen molding comparison, lot traceability and representative-part checks. Confirm the exact grade, batch, target limit and destination requirements with the actual manufacturer and buyer specification.

Information that changes the recommendation

  • Material identity: PC/ABS grade, MBS or acrylic modifier grade, physical form, dosage or compound formula, color, regrind and lot
  • Sampling point: sealed incoming bag, warehouse sample, dryer outlet, hopper, feed throat, compounded pellet or molded article
  • Exact ISO 15512 method selected, laboratory or instrument procedure, calibration or verification record, result unit and reporting limit
  • Sample container, time from sampling to test, exposure to ambient air, sample mass, replicate plan and retained sample identity
  • Agreed water-content acceptance limit and whether it applies to incoming material, after drying or a specific process point
  • Dryer temperature, dew point where used, residence time, loading method, material depth, transfer route and time exposed after drying
  • Molding or compounding window, actual melt history, venting, feed consistency, surface inspection and representative part checks
  • Chinese source factory, production site, lot COA, SDS, TDS, factory change notice and comparable factory-gate quotation terms

Treat moisture as a controlled condition, not a generic material adjective. ISO 15512:2019 covers determination of water content in plastics and includes powders, granules and finished articles within its scope. The method does not select your sampling point or acceptance value. A result taken from a sealed bag may be useful for incoming control, while a result after open hopper exposure answers a different question. Write both the point and timing into the control plan.

Build a chain from lot to result. Record supplier, factory, commercial grade, lot, package, sampling date, sampler, container, test method, instrument and operator or laboratory. Preserve a retained sample. If an MBS or high-rubber powder is blended into PC/ABS, identify each feed stream rather than reporting one unexplained composite value. This protects the comparison when a later molding trial differs.

Do not use the test to diagnose every surface defect. Covestro's processing guidance explains that moisture can vaporize at processing temperature and contribute to streaks or bubbles, but trapped air, contamination, excessive residence time, venting, feeding and dispersion can produce similar appearances. A passing water-content result does not remove those variables. Compare a documented dried control and candidate under the same tool and process before changing the formulation.

Specify the complete test condition. ISO 291:2008 establishes standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing plastics. Where a decision also relies on melt-flow behavior, use the applicable ISO 1133-1 condition and report it completely; do not infer one property from water content. For impact or part approval, use the agreed test or representative component requirement. Each result answers its own defined question.

Set limits from the approved process, not from a generic internet number. Establish a preliminary limit during controlled trials of the exact PC/ABS, modifier, color, regrind level, dryer and part. Then confirm it on commercial lots. A supplier's TDS, COA or family statement may provide useful context, but the purchaser must determine whether it matches the physical form, process point and product specification.

Keep commercial comparison separate. Ask the Chinese source factory whether it produces the modifier, the compounded PC/ABS or both, and link the tested lot to the offered grade. Compare China factory-gate prices only after material scope, packaging, lot documents, sampling responsibility, Incoterms 2020 rule, named place and payment terms are aligned. Moisture evidence neither proves price comparability nor guarantees capacity or destination compliance.

Step-by-step evaluation

  1. 01Define whether the control point is incoming material, after drying, at the hopper, after compounding or another agreed stage.
  2. 02Write a sampling and test instruction covering lot identity, container, timing, ISO 15512 method, instrument, units, replicate rule and retained sample.
  3. 03Collect baseline and candidate samples without changing handling, then record dryer and transfer conditions for every trial.
  4. 04Test moisture and mold or compound both materials under the same documented process, inspecting representative plaques or parts.
  5. 05If a difference appears, check water result, handling, air, venting, residence time, contamination, feed stability and dispersion separately.
  6. 06Set a provisional acceptance rule only after it has been linked to repeated results on the approved grade and process point.
  7. 07Release commercial lots with traceable COA, sampling record, retained sample and a change-control rule for factory, formula, package or method changes.

What to record before approval

  • State ISO 15512 together with the selected method and all sample-handling details; the standard number alone is not a complete test instruction.
  • Do not compare a post-dryer sample with a sealed-bag sample as though they describe the same condition.
  • Use a documented unit and reporting precision; clarify any result reported as a percentage, ppm or another unit.
  • Keep moisture acceptance separate from impact, flame, electrical, color and part-assembly acceptance.
  • Ask Frank through WhatsApp, email or the request form for a lot-control checklist before approving an MBS, ACR or modified PC/ABS source.
