A Chinese source factory offers an MBS or ACR impact modifier on EXW terms, while a freight forwarder asks for FCA at a named terminal or another agreed point. When is FCA worth requesting, and what must be written down so that the price, handover and documents remain comparable?
EXW and FCA do not describe the same delivery boundary. Under EXW, goods are placed at the buyer's disposal at the named place and the seller is not obliged to load the collecting vehicle or clear goods for export. FCA can instead require delivery to the buyer's nominated carrier at the agreed named place, with the exact obligations depending on where that point is. For containerized or multimodal movements, ICC's Incoterms 2020 checklist identifies FCA as a relevant rule to consider. Neither rule is automatically better: choose the one that matches who can load, arrange export formalities, control handover evidence and manage the actual Chinese transport chain. State the Incoterms 2020 rule, precise named place or point, seller, manufacturer, exporter, loading responsibility, cargo readiness, document list and risk-transfer event. Confirm the exact grade, lot and factory separately; a source-factory price alone is not a delivery plan.
Information that changes the recommendation
- Exact MBS or acrylic modifier grade, physical form, package type, net weight, palletization, lot code and approved source factory
- Seller, manufacturer, exporter, freight forwarder and carrier roles, including legal entities and operating contacts
- Chosen Incoterms 2020 rule and an unambiguous named factory, warehouse, terminal, port or carrier handover point
- Who provides and pays for loading, export clearance, booking, inland movement, terminal handling, security data, insurance and onward freight
- The observable handover event, date window, carrier receipt or other evidence used to show delivery and risk transfer
- Purchase order, packing list, commercial invoice, lot-specific COA, SDS, labels, photographs, loading tally and any destination-required evidence
- Whether a factory price includes pallets, export-ready packing, loading, customs support, testing, documents or only material at the factory gate
- Container or vehicle suitability, seal process, package protection, loading plan, count and weight reconciliation, and exception-reporting route
- Pre-shipment lot-release criteria, retained sample, document reconciliation, inspection rule and response to missing or inconsistent evidence
- Quotation validity, quantity, currency, payment trigger, destination requirement and separately stated assumptions outside the delivery rule
Start with the delivery event, not the three-letter abbreviation. ICC explains that EXW delivery occurs when the seller places goods at the buyer's disposal at the named place, without a duty to load the collecting vehicle or clear export where applicable. Under FCA, the agreed named place and whether it is the seller's premises or another point changes the operational handover. Write the exact location and point, not simply EXW China or FCA Shanghai.
Use the actual transport pattern. ICC's official Incoterms 2020 checklist identifies FCA as a rule to consider for containerized or multimodal transport and distinguishes it from rules intended for cargo loaded on board a vessel. This does not select a rule for a particular transaction. The buyer, supplier and qualified logistics or customs advisers must confirm the rule against the shipment, route and destination requirements.
Separate source-factory identity from export responsibility. A manufacturer may make the MBS or ACR while a related exporter or trading company handles the contract and documents. Reconcile the legal seller, factory, exporter, invoice issuer and bank beneficiary; ask who controls loading and export evidence. A factory video, a price headed factory-gate or an ISO certificate does not by itself establish who delivers under the contract.
Make the handover auditable. Before payment or release, define which records connect the commercial lot to the carrier: lot-specific COA, bag and pallet labels, packing list, invoice, loading count, dated photos, seal record where relevant and carrier/terminal receipt. ISO 9001:2026 describes a quality-management framework for controlled operations and documented information, but certification is not a substitute for the buyer's shipment-specific specification or evidence review.
Do not hide loading and export costs inside a price comparison. List each activity as included, seller-arranged at buyer cost, buyer-arranged or unavailable. For EXW, confirm vehicle loading, factory collection constraints and export clearance support before instructing a forwarder. For FCA, confirm the named handover point, carrier nomination, loading division and documents. Price differences may reflect different work and risk, not a different material value.
Protect lot identity across the move. Tie the approved MBS, ACR or high-rubber ABS powder grade and lot to sealed or counted packages, documents and retained samples. Use a documented attribute-inspection plan when it suits labels, bag condition or document completeness; ISO 2859-1:2026 provides AQL-indexed lot-by-lot sampling schemes, but it does not prove a polymer's functional performance or replace agreed laboratory testing.
Keep the final commercial decision conditional. The correct rule, customs responsibility, insurance, destination compliance and document set depend on the countries, route, contract and buyer's own arrangements. Confirm them for each transaction and exact batch. Do not infer lead time, customs outcome, certification, freight cost or factory capacity from a quotation or from this guide.
Step-by-step evaluation
- 01Describe the approved grade, factory, package, lot-release evidence, quantity and destination before asking for transport terms.
- 02Ask every bidder to quote the same quantity and separately state EXW and, where feasible, FCA with the exact named place or point and Incoterms 2020 edition.
- 03Map every task from packed goods to carrier handover: loading, export work, booking, inland leg, terminal movement, records and risk transfer.
- 04Ask the forwarder to confirm practical collection or carrier-nomination instructions for the selected rule and route.
- 05Freeze a shipment evidence pack linking factory, grade, lot, labels, COA, SDS, packing list, invoice and handover records.
- 06Agree a pre-shipment inspection, retained-sample and exception rule before balance payment or carrier release.
- 07Compare offers after adding only documented activities outside each stated delivery boundary, without treating unlike terms as one factory price.
- 08After the first shipment, reconcile actual documents and costs against the agreed handover and update the route-specific purchasing checklist.
What to record before approval
- Write the Incoterms 2020 rule together with a precise named place or point; the three letters alone are not enough.
- Confirm whether loading and export clearance are included before treating EXW as a lower landed-cost option.
- Match factory, seller, exporter, invoice and bank identities; explain any legitimate difference in writing.
- Use lot-specific shipment evidence and retain samples; product-family documents do not identify the cargo handed to a carrier.
- Obtain destination-specific logistics, customs and insurance advice for the actual transaction rather than generalizing from a prior route.
