How to Select an Impact Modifier for Engineering Plastics
A controlled decision process for selecting impact modifiers by resin, performance target, evidence and processing requirements.
Short Answer
Start with the base resin, target impact temperature, appearance requirements and processing conditions. Select products for evaluation only where a controlled product relationship and application evidence exist, then validate the candidate in the customer’s formulation.
Selection criteria
Base resin and final application
Room-temperature and low-temperature impact targets
Transparency, haze, color and YI where relevant
Heat resistance, flow and processing conditions
Mechanical-property tradeoffs
Current reference grade and cost target
Controlled decision table
PC: RC-701, RC-721, RC-732 and RC-756 are products for evaluation. RC-756 evidence uses a separate formulation.
PC/ABS: RC-701, RC-721 and RC-732 have same-formulation evidence; RC-756 remains separately scoped.
POM: RC-736 has a controlled 90/10 dataset. PMMA/SAN: RC-768 has controlled 20%, 25% and 28% datasets.
ABS compounding: RC-178H, RC-198 and RC-158. ASA-related controlled applications: RC-3690 and RC-200A.

Evidence scope: Application and comparative results are formulation-specific and are not guaranteed product specifications. Final grade selection and dosage must be validated in the customer's resin, formulation and processing conditions.
